A Gothic Wedding in Tuscany Full of Tarot, Video Games & Dark Romance

After eighteen years together, Sara and Alessandro knew exactly what they didn’t want from their wedding; obligation, expectation, or tradition for tradition’s sake.

They waited until the timing felt right, not because they needed more certainty about each other, but because they wanted the freedom to create a day that truly belonged to them. A wedding shaped by personality rather than pressure. A celebration that reflected the way they already lived, loved, and moved through the world.

Set amongst the warm autumn light of Tuscany at La Fornace di Sammontana, their wedding became an immersive blend of gothic romance, nerd culture, symbolism, colour, and quiet rebellion - proof that dark weddings do not need to be sombre, and that alternative styling can feel every bit as joyful, elegant, and alive.

A Wedding Designed Without Compromise

Sara and Alessandro have always shared a darker aesthetic, woven through every part of their lives. Rather than treating their wedding as a separate version of themselves they chose to make it a continuation of who they already were.

For them, waiting eighteen years made perfect sense. It meant they could create the day exactly as they wanted, without outside interference or expectations shaping their decisions.

They weren’t interested in recreating a wedding template.

They wanted to build an experience.

A Symbolic Ceremony Led by Family

One of the most personal choices they made was to step away from traditional Italian ceremony expectations.

In Italy, weddings are most commonly celebrated either religiously in a church or formally through a civil ceremony. Sara and Alessandro wanted something more intimate, something written specifically for them.

Instead, they chose a symbolic ceremony led by Sara’s sister and Alessandro’s brother. It became one of the most emotional parts of the day.

Rather than standard vows or formal wording, the ceremony was filled with references to the things they love: anime, television, video games, shared memories, and phrases that held meaning within their relationship.

Dark Does Not Mean Colourless

One of the most beautiful aspects of this wedding is the way it challenges assumptions about alternative aesthetics… dark weddings are often misunderstood.

But Sara, a wedding florist herself, understood that darkness and colour are not opposites. She designed every floral element personally, carefully building an autumnal palette that felt rich, romantic, and alive. Deep tones sat alongside softer warmth. Texture layered with movement. Gothic styling met seasonal colour.

The result was atmospheric without feeling heavy. It proved something many alternative couples already know:

Dark does not mean sad.

Tarot Cards, Magic Potions & Video Game Soundtracks

Rather than creating a wedding guests simply attended, Sara and Alessandro wanted to create something people could step into.

Every detail was designed to feel interactive. Guests found their tables through a tarot-inspired seating display arranged like a fortune teller’s reading table. Each tarot card had been paired with a video game reference important to the couple. Instead of standard favours, guests received tiny potion bottles filled with maple syrup, each thoughtfully matched to a personality or energy chosen specifically for them. Disposable cameras and instant film invited people to participate in documenting the day. A tattoo station offered temporary designs, including playful versions featuring the couple themselves. And during dinner, guests took part in a photographic treasure hunt.

This wasn’t a wedding people watched.

Choosing Each Other Over Tradition

Many of the Sara and Alessandro’s decisions quietly challenged conventional wedding rules.

They stayed together the night before. They chose their outfits together (Sara chose Asteria by Legend Bridal). Sara walked down the aisle alone and Alessandro wore make-up.

These choices were not made for shock value or rebellion for rebellion’s sake.

They simply reflected who they are.

And while they did receive criticism from some people around them, neither felt the need to compromise.

As Sara put it:

“There are no rules when it comes to organising a wedding. A wedding represents the couple, not tradition.”

That philosophy runs through every image from the day. Nothing feels performative. Nothing feels chosen to please anyone else.

A Wedding That Felt Entirely Theirs

What makes Sara and Alessandro’s wedding so compelling is not simply the styling… although every detail is beautifully considered.

It’s the clarity, the sense that every choice came from a place of honesty.

After eighteen years together, they didn’t need to prove anything. They simply needed to create something that felt like home. Their wedding reminds us that alternative weddings are not about rejecting tradition for the sake of it. They are about choosing meaning over expectation. Personality over performance. And creating a celebration that feels unmistakably, unapologetically yours.
