The Wedding That Never Was: Reimagining Wuthering Heights as a Gothic Wedding
Laura Fitzgerald Photography
Some stories refuse to let us go.
Nearly two hundred years after Emily Brontë first published Wuthering Heights, we are still captivated by its windswept moors, haunted atmosphere and unforgettable characters. It's a novel that has inspired countless adaptations, sparked endless debate and secured its place as one of the defining works of gothic literature.
But despite being remembered as one of literature's greatest love stories, there is one wedding that never happens; Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff never stand together before family and friends. They never exchange vows. Their story is one of impossible timing, social expectation, longing and loss.
And that left us wondering...
What if they had?
Not because we wanted to recreate the novel scene by scene, but because we wanted to explore what a wedding inspired by Wuthering Heights might feel like.

Looking Beyond the Plot
When people think of themed weddings, it's easy to imagine costumes or direct recreations of a favourite film or book.
That wasn't our intention. Instead, we asked a different question.
What are the emotions that make Wuthering Heights unforgettable?
Wild landscapes. Untamed nature. The changing seasons. Storms rolling across the moors. Weathered stone. Longing. Devotion. Grief. The feeling that the landscape itself has become part of the story.
Those ideas became the foundation for our editorial.
Rather than recreating scenes from the novel, we invited each supplier to interpret these themes through their own craft.

A Collective Interpretation
One of the things that makes The Dark Wedding Collective different is that no two suppliers approach creativity in quite the same way.
Given the same brief, every florist, stationer, dress designer, celebrant, stylist and cake maker will notice different details. They'll be drawn to different emotions. They'll tell different parts of the same story.
That's exactly what makes collaborative editorials so exciting. This wasn't one person's vision. It was the result of talented creatives each bringing their own perspective to the world Emily Brontë created.
The castle ruins and wild landscape; the styling and floristry that brings the over-grown, moss covered and weathered bone to the fore, the windswept hair and billowy dress, candle ceremony and stone hewn cake.
Together, those individual interpretations created something richer than any one supplier could have achieved alone.

The Beauty of Interpretation
Perhaps that's why Wuthering Heights continues to inspire nearly two centuries after it was written. It leaves space for interpretation.
We approached this editorial in exactly the same way.
Rather than asking, "How can we recreate Wuthering Heights?"
We asked,
"How can we capture the feeling of Wuthering Heights?"

Coming Soon...
Over the next few weeks we'll be taking you behind the scenes of this editorial, sharing how each supplier interpreted the brief in their own unique way, and exploring how two photographers captured the very same story through completely different artistic lenses.
After all, every great story deserves to be told from more than one perspective.
