Mention the phrase dark tourism and you'll usually get one of two reactions.
Some people recoil, imagining an unhealthy fascination with death and disaster.
Others immediately begin listing the places they've always wanted to visit. Transylvania. Salem. Bran Castle. Whitby Abbey. The Paris Catacombs. Edinburgh's underground vaults.
But dark tourism isn't simply about seeking out the macabre.
At its best, it's about understanding the stories that shaped the places we visit.

Real Weddings
After eighteen years together, Sara and Alessandro knew exactly what they didn’t want from their wedding; obligation, expectation, or tradition for tradition’s sake.
They waited until the timing felt right, not because they needed more certainty about each other, but because they wanted the freedom to create a day that truly belonged to them. A wedding shaped by personality rather than pressure. A celebration that reflected the way they already lived, loved, and moved through the world.
There are some stories that only the dark-hearted truly understand. Stories woven from candle smoke and cathedral shadows. Stories where love is not softened to fit tradition, but allowed to bloom wildly, honestly, and without apology.
And perhaps that is why World Goth Day feels so important to us at The Dark Wedding Collective.
Not because goth is simply an aesthetic, but because goth has always been a sanctuary for people who longed to exist authentically. A space for the romantic, the unconventional, the artistic, the outsiders, the dreamers. A world where beauty is found in ruins, poetry, melancholy, velvet darkness, and fierce devotion.
For many people, Halloween is all about costumes, horror films and sweet treats. But for Danielle and Connor, their wedding offered an opportunity to celebrate something much older.
Choosing to marry around Samhain, they embraced the Pagan roots of the season, weaving together rich autumn colours, gothic details and meaningful symbolism to create a wedding that felt deeply personal to them.
There are weddings that follow a script.
And then there are weddings that tear the script into confetti and throw it all at once.
Alice and Tom’s December celebration at Shack Revolution is the perfect example of a truly alternative wedding, unapologetically personal and completely their own. In 2022, a group of alternative wedding suppliers gathered inside a deconsecrated church in Leeds to create a dark celestial wedding shoot. Four years later, we can see it was about more than moons and stars.
The alternative wedding world has grown enormously since these images were taken. New suppliers have appeared. New events and communities have been created. The breadth of what an alternative wedding can look like has expanded, and, somewhere along the way, two independent wedding collectives eventually found their paths converging to become Dark Wedding Collective.
Why choosing a wedding photographer is about more than finding photographs you like.
Put two brilliant photographers in the same place, at the same moment, with the same couple in front of them and you might assume you'd end up with two similar wedding galleries… you won't. That was one of the unexpected gifts of our Wuthering Heights editorial at Sheriff Hutton Castle.
For the final part of this series, we wanted to look at something we don't talk about enough when choosing wedding suppliers: creative perspective.
There is something wonderfully strange about the way we've turned the heart into a symbol of love. The real thing isn't symmetrical. It isn't pink. It certainly doesn't come with an arrow through it. It's muscle and valves and blood. It beats somewhere beneath your ribs without asking permission, keeping you alive while you fall in love, have your heart broken, mend it, risk it and ultimately decide to give it to somebody else. Which, when you think about it, makes the anatomical heart a rather perfect wedding symbol.
When we first began imagining our Wuthering Heights inspired editorial, we knew we didn't simply want to recreate scenes from Emily Brontë's novel. Instead, we asked ourselves a different question.
What if Catherine and Heathcliff had been given the ending they never received?
Not a grand ballroom celebration or a lavish society wedding, but a ceremony woven from windswept moorland grasses, ancient promises and enduring devotion. A wedding where love had outlasted grief, where two souls finally found peace together.
Every supplier approached this concept with remarkable generosity and creativity. Rather than creating beautiful pieces in isolation, each maker became another storyteller, adding their own chapter to a narrative that felt hauntingly familiar and yet entirely new.
Some stories refuse to let us go.
Nearly two hundred years after Emily Brontë first published Wuthering Heights, we are still captivated by its windswept moors, haunted atmosphere and unforgettable characters. It's a novel that has inspired countless adaptations, sparked endless debate and secured its place as one of the defining works of gothic literature.
But despite being remembered as one of literature's greatest love stories, there is one wedding that never happens; Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff never stand together before family and friends. They never exchange vows. Their story is one of impossible timing, social expectation, longing and loss.
And that left us wondering...
What if they had?
There is something undeniably magical about ancient ruins at golden hour. The way the last light of the day catches weathered stone. The way history lingers in the air. The way nature slowly reclaims what was once built by human hands.

All black elegant spiderweb Gothic Glam styled wedding
For many, black is not a wedding colour. Of course they are wrong.
For me it’s the natural choice for well, everything… and I know I’m not alone!
When we started planning this shoot to represent our 2024 wedding fair, we knew we wanted to show that black and all things dark and typically considered spooky, are actually incredibly beautiful, meaningful and really bloody glamourous. We excitedly crafted this gorgeous styled wedding shoot where black is taken to the extreme as far as the wedding world is considered. Here it’s not just a key colour, but the ONLY colour. Where spiders, webs and bones are no longer simply Halloween motifs, but wonderfully symbolic emblems of love and commitment and also insanely elegant.
