Mention the phrase dark tourism and you'll usually get one of two reactions.
Some people recoil, imagining an unhealthy fascination with death and disaster.

But dark tourism isn't simply about seeking out the macabre.

Real Weddings
After eighteen years together, Sara and Alessandro knew exactly what they didn’t want from their wedding; obligation, expectation, or tradition for tradition’s sake.

And perhaps that is why World Goth Day feels so important to us at The Dark Wedding Collective.
Not because goth is simply an aesthetic, but because goth has always been a sanctuary for people who longed to exist authentically. A space for the romantic, the unconventional, the artistic, the outsiders, the dreamers. A world where beauty is found in ruins, poetry, melancholy, velvet darkness, and fierce devotion.
For many people, Halloween is all about costumes, horror films and sweet treats. But for Danielle and Connor, their wedding offered an opportunity to celebrate something much older.
Choosing to marry around Samhain, they embraced the Pagan roots of the season, weaving together rich autumn colours, gothic details and meaningful symbolism to create a wedding that felt deeply personal to them.
There are weddings that follow a script.

In 2022, a group of alternative wedding suppliers gathered inside a deconsecrated church in Leeds to create a dark celestial wedding shoot. Four years later, we can see it was about more than moons and stars.
The alternative wedding world has grown enormously since these images were taken. New suppliers have appeared. New events and communities have been created. The breadth of what an alternative wedding can look like has expanded, and, somewhere along the way, two independent wedding collectives eventually found their paths converging to become Dark Wedding Collective.
Why choosing a wedding photographer is about more than finding photographs you like.
Put two brilliant photographers in the same place, at the same moment, with the same couple in front of them and you might assume you'd end up with two similar wedding galleries… you won't. That was one of the unexpected gifts of our Wuthering Heights editorial at Sheriff Hutton Castle.
For the final part of this series, we wanted to look at something we don't talk about enough when choosing wedding suppliers: creative perspective.
There is something wonderfully strange about the way we've turned the heart into a symbol of love. The real thing isn't symmetrical. It isn't pink. It certainly doesn't come with an arrow through it. It's muscle and valves and blood. It beats somewhere beneath your ribs without asking permission, keeping you alive while you fall in love, have your heart broken, mend it, risk it and ultimately decide to give it to somebody else. Which, when you think about it, makes the anatomical heart a rather perfect wedding symbol.
When we first began imagining our Wuthering Heights inspired editorial, we knew we didn't simply want to recreate scenes from Emily Brontë's novel. Instead, we asked ourselves a different question.
What if Catherine and Heathcliff had been given the ending they never received?
Not a grand ballroom celebration or a lavish society wedding, but a ceremony woven from windswept moorland grasses, ancient promises and enduring devotion. A wedding where love had outlasted grief, where two souls finally found peace together.
Every supplier approached this concept with remarkable generosity and creativity. Rather than creating beautiful pieces in isolation, each maker became another storyteller, adding their own chapter to a narrative that felt hauntingly familiar and yet entirely new.
Some stories refuse to let us go.
Nearly two hundred years after Emily Brontë first published Wuthering Heights, we are still captivated by its windswept moors, haunted atmosphere and unforgettable characters. It's a novel that has inspired countless adaptations, sparked endless debate and secured its place as one of the defining works of gothic literature.
But despite being remembered as one of literature's greatest love stories, there is one wedding that never happens; Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff never stand together before family and friends. They never exchange vows. Their story is one of impossible timing, social expectation, longing and loss.
And that left us wondering...
